Trent Alexander-Arnold scrapes into top five as greatest Premier League full-backs ranked

Trent Alexander-Arnold is only just in the top five full-backs in Premier League history, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

There's not much chance he can climb any higher too as the Liverpool defender is set to leave English football this summer.

Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season, talkSPORT understands.

The Spanish giants have offered a five-year deal worth more than £220,000-per-week to the 26-year-old.

Since making his league debut aged 18 in 2016, Alexander-Arnold has made 254 Premier League appearances.

Across those matches, he has scored 17 goals and provided 64 assists, the most by a defender in Premier League history.

However, Agbonlahor has only ranked Alexander-Arnold fifth in his top five greatest Premier League full-backs.

The England international narrowly edged out honourable mentions Andrew Robertson and Pablo Zabaleta.

Explaining his decision, Agbonlahor told Breakfast: "I'm not going with maybe some players that people would choose.

"I'm going off, I didn't play against Trent, but the other four that I've picked, I've played against very good full-backs.

"So in number five, I'm going to go with Trent himself. He will have two Premier League titles.

"He's won the Champions League, 64 Premier League assists, the most in Premier League history (by a defender). So I've got Trent in number five."

Alexander-Arnold won the league with the Reds during the 2019/20 campaign and is set to do the same this term.

Arne Slot's side are currently 12 points clear of Arsenal with just nine matches remaining.

Working through his list, Agbonlahor added: "In number four, I have got (Branislav) Ivanovic at Chelsea. Playing against him was one of the toughest full-backs I played against.

"Won two Premier Leagues with Chelsea, a Champions League, a Europa League. Top defender, very good on the ball, aggressive, good in the air as well. All around right-back."

Branislav Ivanovic won multiple league titles with Chelsea during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Overall, he scored 22 goals in 274 Premier League appearances across spells with the Blues and West Brom.

The talkSPORT co-host continued: "Number three, I'm going to go with Patrice Evra. I thought he was incredible at Manchester United. Five Premier League titles, one Champions League.

"Had everything so good on the ball. Quick, strong, aggressive. Could play as centre-half as well.

"Number two, I'm going to go with Kyle Walker. Six Premier Leagues, crazy. One Champions League.

"For me, as a right-back, he's the best ever right back to play in the Premier League. So he's in number two."

Patrice Evra and Kyle Walker have a combined 11 Premier League titles to their name.

The pair have also made 688 appearances in the top-flight between them.

However, Agbonlahor admits his pick for the Premier League's best ever full-back 'had everything'.

The former Aston Villa forward explained: "Number one, Ashley Cole. Three Premier League titles, one Champions League. Playing against Ashley Cole was one of the toughest full-backs I played against. He had everything.

"You've seen the clips of when he's faced Cristiano Ronaldo. You know Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't get past him when he was at his peak.

"I think Ashley Cole, what he's won as well at Chelsea and what he's done for the England national team, outstanding player."

Ashley Cole was a member of Arsenal's Invincibles before winning a third title after leaving the Gunners for Chelsea.

By the time he retired he had made 384 Premier League appearances, scoring 15 goals and adding 33 assists from left-back.
